While the Generals weathered a disap
pointing, hard-fought loss to Randolpl
Macon on Homecoming Saturday, the
events of the \Veekend were more tha
enough to drown student sorrows ove
the defeat.
Beyond the usual band parties, dances,
and tailgating, students and alumni were
treated to an exciting and diverse concert
at the Pavilion on Friday night. The
Roots, an up-and-coming rap group,
opened the show, followed by 70's folkrock icons, The Band.
The beautiful Virginia fall provided a
perfect backdrop for the reunion of old
classmates, float parades, and the suspenseful Homecoming Queen declaration. To the delight of her represented
International Club, junior Natalia Garcia
was crowned.

This three-day event is steeped in
Washington and Lee traditions, from
football to touring President Elrod's
house to picnicking on the Front Lawn.
Many parents had the pleasure of attending student plays and musical performances, or visiting the professors
about whom they had heard more than
they w anted to know.
Just about everyone enjoyed eating
out in Lexington, touring the town and
campus, and getting together again as a
family while also meeting new people.
Some especially brave parents even
opted to test the waters - not to mention the grain - at fraternity parties.
Despite the cloudy day,
weather was perfect ~

College really isn't that different from elementary school. From students to Dining
Hall staff, just about everyone got caught up
in the candy and costumery of Halloween.
While some pondered trick-or-treating,
others took a stab at carving pumpkins,
many of which decorated the Colonnade and
the dorms.
Of course, the highlight of the big night
was the parties. Many of these were
costume centered and left students to wake
up November 1st dreading the day when
they would finally be "too old" to dress for
Halloween. Others woke up much later that
day, vowing never again to drink unidentifiable orange liquids, especially when at
Zollman's.

This was not only a time to make
a run on Santa hats and antlers at
Wal-Mart. Christmas Weekend also
marked everyone's last chance to
enjoy parties and bands before
Finals Week. Ignoring that looming
danger, students flocked to the fraternity houses and to the Pavilion
concert by Washington and Lee favorites Curnutte and Mal1er.

In many ways, it was a monwnental rush
season at W&L. It was the first year of
winter rush for the males. While fraternity members had mixed feeling about
this new tradition, most freshmen were
happy to have more time to get acquainted with the houses and their members. This spoke for itself in the 84°/o of
freshman males who pledged, one of the
highest rates in recent years. All of this in
spite of one infamous New York Times
Magazine feature ...
Women's Rush enjoyed equal changes
and equal successes. With the colonization of Kappa Delta, women now had to
choose among five sororities. Kappa
Delta greeted a strong pledge class, allowing the other sororities to maintain more
manageable pledge class sizes.

From the fraternities to the quads to

many opportunities to reward themselves for a \veek of hard work with

course, the fraternity band parties were
the highlight of most people's Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights, as performers such as Doug Clark and the Hit

Sunny afternoons provided the perfect

WASHINGTON AND LEE

Office of the President
(540) 463-8700
TO:
Members of the Washington and Lee Student Body
FROM:
John W. Elrod
The four years spent at Washington and Lee are as fleeting as any period in your life. It seems
that no sooner have you adjusted to the excitement of the opening months of your freshman year
than thoughts are upon you three years later about what is to follow graduation in the spring.
Life races by in these four years because, in large measure, they are filled with novel and exciting
experiences: academic challenges, social events, athletic competition, travel abroad, an array of
residential experiences ranging from Graham-Lees to a farm house in the county, responsibilities
in student government and other student organizations, service projects, making friends to last a
lifetime, etc. Washington and Lee is all this and at another level it is growing up and discovering
yourself, the person you are to be for a lifetime. No wonder we never forget these years.
The Calyx preserves these memories. As you join the rank of I 9,000 alumni and alumnae, and as
the decades begin to pass, these memories will be forever embroidered upon the pages of this
book. When you look through it years from now in solitude or with old friends and family, it
will sharpen your happy memories of life on this exquisite campus, in Lexington and the county,
and all the many and varied experiences which together constitute the W&L experience.
Enjoy this book over the years, and let it be a constant reminder of the glories of your life at
Washington and Lee.
Sincerely,
~'vJ.~

Once again, the brothers of Beta Theta Pi outdid themselves by pushing the envelopes of fra tty behav ior and spend ing the majority
of the year on super secret, quadrup le, "this time we mean it" proba tion. We tested the limits of the m aximum occupancy of the Blodge by packing the house with dragon lovers at the first ever MEGA mixer with Phi Kap, Theta, and Kappa.
The year's highlights, and our last p arty for that matter, was the world renowned Beta Christmas Weekend. Pika was kind enou gh
to lend u s their microwave, and their tree to cook up a grea t feast and d ecorate the B-lod ge. Everyone got carried away with the
Christmas spirit. Holbrook said "yea", Crawford said "Ba", Johnson land ed a right hook, and by the time Mom Haley dug herself
out of the protective barricades provided by Brother TeStrake, we woke up on social p robation for the rest of the year. Undaunted
by the fact we were in a social coma fo r the rest of the year, the Dragons went to work on rush. On the strength of Christmas weekend,
we pulled in 14 absolute rockstars.
To ease the boredom of our endless social probation, the MVP socie ty was formed . This orga niza tion, shrouded in mys tery and
driven by one sacred purpose, took the campus by storm.
One ray of sunshine in the B' s life was the beginning of the LAX season. Half the house was ca ptained on the lax field by Brothers

After a good rush last year, this was the year we were supposed to slack off as usual and not do anything. We didn't
do anything of course, but we still managed to con 16 guys into the Lodge this year, including one of the worst drunks
ever, The Redge, and Michael Corleone's brother, Fredo.
Kids in space. Our functions continued to be half-assed as usual, but under the capable guidance of Lathrop
"Meow-Meow" Nelson, it turned out to be a good year, even though we missed a year without seeing Rick Hill
sprawled unconscious across the floor of the bathroom at 6 in the morning, a bottle of mini-thins just out of his reach.
Fighting Gravity came by for Homecoming, and Duane was here for Late Night all year, even if his music started
getting a liiiiiitle sketchy towards the end. Reed finally got his mixer this year, with Chi-0 and The Convertibles out
on the front lawn in zero-degree weather. "Won't someone please think of the children?!"
Rock-Bone, The Beast, and Cheetos all made appearances this year, and even appeared to have a good time. As
long as someone taps Rockbone on the shoulder and hands him a beer, he's happy. Keep the stall door open for
Cheetos and HE'S happy. Everyone was Happy, especially Sacha, not that his underground life finally began to be
exposed.
We did a lot of stupid stuff this year. That's good. Beirut became the Lodge sport, the Spaniard managed to stick
his foot in his mouth several times this year, Gentle Ben never stopped drinking, The Fat Kid's behavior became more
bizarre as graduation approached, and Lathrop became embroiled in the Lodge check-book scandal. "Anyone
wanna go to the Staircase? I'm not the one who' s gonna pay!"
The Chi Psi Circus finally became a reality. We had clowns on the lawn, freaks, and not all of them were dressed
up. It was a good time had by all, but FD pales in comparison to the stunning appearance of Beef Boras during Alumni
Weekend. It could have been a let down, but it wasn't. While most were downstairs dancing to a band that was Right
On, a few were upstairs watching the Beef turn water into bourbon. We can only wait for the Second Coming.
Good-bye to the largest class in Lodge history. Some have jobs, some don't. Some launched their kids into space,
and some didn't. All hail children.

Since the founding of the Alpha Chapter of Kappa Alpha in 1865, never has the Order done so much with so little (money). Alpha once
again was instrumental in making W&L a place worth attending. Throughout the year, we were a sight worth seeing as we caught the
attention of fellow greeks, administrators, perspectives, police, and even the occasional coed. Dean Buddy Atkins put it best in saying, "I
don't hate Kappa Alpha, but you guys are too damn rowdy and too damn cocky. You all need to handle your alcohol better and stop
bullying other fraternities. KA is ... good ... fraternity."
Alpha excelled in '96-'97 under the leadership of President Chad Shuford and his cabinet, Hickson and Thomas. Shuford's laissez-fa ire
approach to the Presidency proved successful as he worked the system in times of need managing to keep the Alpha off probation
throughout the year. Unfortunately, the excessive fining that the IFC rained upon us could not be avoided in part due to our inability to
handle alcohol.
However the fines did not deter us from participating in every aspect ofW &L life. Whether it was on the athletic fields, in the classroom,
in the community, in front of IFC Judicial Committee, or in Buddy's office, the Order always left its mark.
Despite our strong and deep influence throughout the W&L community, Alpha remains misunderstood by outsiders and it became
apparent why this year. As the school lets in more spazzes and monkeyboys, there are fewer people with which we can socialize. During
Rush, we were afraid that this sad fact might hurt our string of blue chip pledge classes. However this was not the case as we acquired
20 guys and 2 rush violations.
Socially, Alpha exceeded all expectations, especially those of the budget. However thanks to the power of assessment which reared its
ugly head twice during the year, we were able to continue our dominance of theW &L social scene. Fall term was highlighted with Beach
Party (and the temporary disappearance of J-Day to the slide) and Christmas Weekend (911 our portrait has been kidnaped). Winter term
witnessed Shitkicker's Ball, the Bahamas/Keyes trip, and the first mixers in Alpha's distinguished history. The year concluded in the
Spring with plenty of Schaefball and the Old South Ball in Charleston, or rather Zollman's. While we mourn the departure of our seniors,
no one will ever forget the G.T.P. Brothers.

Kappa Sigma once again emerged victorious in the '96-'97 school year.
After an enthusiastic rush--"STRIPPER'S HERE!!"--, our efforts were
stymied by the photojournalism of our most beloved of alumni. With
the love of the hill and nationals on our side, we picked up six solid
freshman, Amidst the parties with our house band, The Convertibles-NoS***!, we also featured Agents of Good Roots and several of
Lexington's recently reformed pharmaceutical experts. With a second
place finish in 1M's, the newly elected president of the IFC, a Phi Beta
Kappa, ODK, editors of the Political Review and the Arete, the president and seven vice-presidents of the Leyburn Society (resume fillers,
anyone?), members of the board of Habitat for Humanity, as well as
members of the cross-country, football, tennis, track, wrestling, golf
and rugby teams, the Mu chapter maintained its high level of campus
involvement. Sadly, we said good-bye to the last class to really earn
our brotherhood, at least according to the New York Times. Prepare to
enter Haden's World, Tons, who didn't know that comforters were
flammable, leaves us after 15 glorious years of college; Warthy who
uncharacteristically rose to the occasion, repeatedly in Cancun; Ret
Bo- where's Gi Gi's scrunchy?; Zags who swears she was cute last

Despite the de-activation of PDT spiritual leader Earl "How you like them apples, Cole?" Gregory, the 1996-1997 fightin' Phis once again
showed the campus the way frats were meant to be. Jimmy "BAM!" Read avenged yesteryear's mishap with Sneaky by chalking up his first
career win, bringing his record to 1-7 (win by K.O.). Hearty kudos go to Brother T. Wisdom on his finest year, winning the "I Can't Believe These
Chicks Aren't Catching On!" Award. Hoyt Edwin Chastain followed suit, snaring the "My Turn!" Cup. Brother Fischer wooed liberal freshman
girls with his inventive "they should be sent to the moon" theory. Sandy "the shadow" Hooper maintained quota as E.C. President, while
keeping an extra special eye on the freshmen. Brother Villere managed to prove that professors really don't fail seniors, while Battlemaster
Gardner finally discovered Surfer Boy Connell in the closet. Smilin' Dick Ritchey took the baton from the former PDT President Billy Guice in
1
1 brilliant form . Dawson, incapable of maintaining standards of decency without Gary's mellowing influence, created quite a stir in Gaines with
Reece Wilson. Our new recruits performed admirably, making sure everyone on the Hill was up to speed with occurrences at the house. As
. always, Brother Wick proved to know "a lot about bands."
Once again, the Phis dominated athletic fields. Phi football payers, whose names you can see on the opposite page, Cryotined their way to
success. As planned, President Fischer broke every W&L quarterback record. Phis also dominated the soccer, hockey, wrestling, baseball, and
track teams. Although we were once again unable to snare any water polo or volleyball players, Brother Grumbine paddled his way to fame.
As a side note, the Phis would like to thank Erin Ruane for all her support, and all other ladies (you know who you are) who helped to make
the '96-'97 school year our best (statistically) ever.
Finally, Phi Delt would like to bid a humble farewell to our graduates, the fightin'est Phis we ever saw.

The 1996-1997 school year was another success for the first house established at W &L. The pseudo-winter rush
bankrupted the house and produced fifteen pledges. Though initially barely worth the monetary trade-off, the
group quickly began to bond and pay dues. Phi Psi brothers again represented the house in all facets of campus
life. Jimmy "tough guy" Slams and Chris ba-ba-Baldwin were defenders of justice on the EC. The Phi Psi
stranglehold was also felt courtesy of class officers and representatives of Kathekon, IFC, SCC, SAB, and the
ACLU. Athletically we were not to be denied as Phi Psi won the overall I.M. title and had varsity athletes on the
football, wrestling, track, tennis, golf, lacrosse, basketball, and baseball teams.
Several house traditions continued this year. Pledge Redd met Death face to face and thus far seems pretty
healthy. The sophomore class maintained our strong relationship with B&G while shocking brothers with their
questionable tendencies. Kimmel learned to communicate with other humans as Silas attempted to communicate
with Hale-Bopp. As for the juniors, Big Time kept lifting, Frosty started pumping, and McKinley took up vehicular
deer hunting.
Winter formal meant much road cheese and the G-funkering of the Willson Walker bathroom. The annual
Senior Night at the Palms ended in a brawl and a few wet pledges. What FD weekend lacked in a noise permit,
it made up for in female alternative lifestyles. The seniors left their mark on Myrtle Beach and Mexican cops left
their mark on Thrall. The Annex handled St. Patty's Day, rivalled only by Hobes for Beirut supremacy at weekly
performances by the Slacks. Vards is located at Route 7, Box 134. Dutch single-handedly held down the Raisin
subsisting entirely on cheese sticks, Dynan trashed the Riverhouse, and McKinley moved between the Mill and
Gaines.
Sadly, we must bid farewell to eleven seniors. Good luck and Amici to Fritz ''ball and chain" Berckmueller, Todd

The 1997-1997 school year proved to be no change for the brothers of the Skull as we continued to set the
social, athletic, and academic standard at W&L. With visits from rock and roll, blues, funk, and motown
sensations such as Gran Torino, Right On, The Mailmen (they delivered!), Chip's dad's band-- The Blues
Gems, and Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts, the Skulls, led by Crazy Legs Livingston, Moonwalk Burns, Hip Hop
Guggenheimer and Robb "Merengue" Greenfield were given the chance to display the dance moves that have
made us famous campus-wide (especially with the ladies!). Athletically, Skull dominance was seen on the
soccer, football, and rugby fields in the fall, extended to the swimming venue in the winter and on the lacrosse
field in the spring. On top of the traditional powerhouse performances in intramurals, the Phi Kaps also saw
seven juniors elected to captain positions for the '97 -'98 athletic seasons.
Skullastically, we Phi Kaps remained geniuses in our own minds, even if we have not received proper
recognition for our academic exploits from those people that give out the grades. The freshman class, twenty
strong, has a big void to fill with the graduation of sixteen stellar senior Skulls--Jake Blair, McGuire "Captain

Once Again, "PiKA's gonna be on top."
-Ron Jeremy
The 96/97 season was another gala season for the Fighting Pricks. With Bobby Mayhew and Kritser on
the D.L. and the acquisition of former Welterweight Champ Brother Scott Rhodes, the Pikes returned to full
strength. Having problems dealing with people taller than him and his pituitary gland acting up, Lil' Peter
Scrambler went to live among the Spaniards as he "worked out some personal things."
This year's rush debited a net gain of 17 rapscallions and credited the Viper account in the amount of one.
Unfortunately next year's rush may only produce the bid of a "solid band from Boston." The Annual PiKA/
Kappa mixer went off without a hitch. X Games Master Matthew Patrick is quoted as saying, "The topless
jaunt to Stop-In was a complete success as was the toddler-napping contest, Yellow Brick Road will never
be the same." The only comments attributed to Kappa were the words, "punt, chaffe, random, sketchy, and
Draconian." Kappa President Carmen Elektra broke her clavicle in the Fiery Vienna Sausage eating contest,
and responded "Were it not for my injury, I would've crushed the Chigger. The Chi O's can have their derby
days, I am a PiKA gal." Invitations to next year's event have already been sent, so quit kissing our ass!
John Bayer, the loud and obnoxious Texan from Pittsburgh, successfully fought a foiled recall attempt
following the house elections held during the Blizzard of '84. Proving his worth to the Fraternity, Bayer paid
his dues and was instrumental in the hostage rescue in Lima. Also, New Head of the Pilitburo Andrew Curry
has expressed his interest in turning Reid hall into "Lake PiKA: Summer Camp for Troubled Youth."
Unfortunately Brother Williams Jenning Bryan was defeated in his 69th attempt to put PiKA back on silver
standard.
Infamous Pi Kap brother Turner Field was spotted across campus and around the world, sharing his
happy outlook and special diet with those in need. Also in Sports News, Beaupain "The Wily Frenchman"
launched a new line ofEau d'Toilette and Footcare products under the name of "Mediocrity." A devastating
rumor swept the campus this year that an unnamed PiKA brother crashed three cars, joined STS and was
forced to leave school, that fortunately did NOT happen.
Sports recap: The Generals were led on the Bench by many illustrious fighting pricks. The Dump led the
tennis team in fumble recoveries and missed punts while Frumpy Troll screamed obscenities from under the
footbridge. Two Sport Superstar "Playboy Buddy Brackett" led the biathlon team as senior year octa captain
but was defeated in the quest to find a warm napping spot on the engine of Perlow's car by a dead Lexington
Feline, this left Hunter to sleep in the couches. Pledge Reconnaissance led to the apprehension of the
Unabomber and the firing of Bryant Gumbell. Grundel as usual quarterbacked the basketball team, and
posted a .46 ERA. An anonymous Fighting Prick "Robbie Heyer" kicked off his modeling career by
appearing in a mature magazine piece "Gina, Tina, and Robbie, Picnic Bench Pals." AI "no nickname"
Dominick hit a home run in his first at bat, pinch ran for the fighting cross country team, and consistently
shot 4 over par on the B.V. mini putt course. Moile and Skeletor quit the shadow boxing fencing teams to
pursue their life long dream of becoming Solid Gold dancers. And a special shout to Alvin Townley, the first
ever dorm counselor to host "The Grind."
In a speculative financial move engineered by OJ classic, the fighting pricks performed a leveraged buyout
of North Face, so keep in mind all future purchases will only contribute to our coiffures. In a last minute
decision, Nike officials shot down the "I am Tim Jenkins, I am Tim Jenkins" ad campaign and replaced Tim
with an unknown golfer. Unfortunately in a retaliatory event Abercrombie & Fitch have dropped their line
of controversial Tom Cox grippies and the ad campaign featuring F. Ted Wells.

The 1996-97 school year was another fruitful one for the brothers of Rho chapter. Bill Sigler passed along his presidential torch to

We partied like rock stars fall term. Our annual Pimps and Prostitutes party saw brothers get their swerve on with numerous scantily

again!) and FD ... who remembers? Pat McGee Band, R&B All Stars, and Big Mamma Boogie Band were there just in case anyone was
still standing.
Winter term ended with the loss of two of our most distinguished brothers. Aaron Howell left sc hool to pursue an internship taste
testing for Finesse shampoo. William Dempsey departed after being banned from three states along the East Coast and fathering three
small wild boars.
Spring term kicked off with alumni weekend and special appearances by Sir Mix a Lot and Too Short at our annual "Players' Ball".
The rain stopped just long enough for a sunny Foxfield. Alumni weekend lived up to expectations. Unfortunately brother Hardy could
not return to talk trash about the good ol' days and pass out by 7 o'clock. The second annual Rose Ball finished off the semester seeing
another spring term firmly lodged under each of the brothers' belts.
The brothers of Rho are active in every aspect ofW &L. Anthony Mazzarelli served as IFC president and All American soccer player
Mikel Parker we elected an IFC Junior Justice. The soccer team is dominated by Rho and we also have brothers on the baseball,

he will introduce the war-torn country to Blue Motorcycles and fine W&L style. Brian Greef

The 1996-96 was another eventful and spectacular year for the Brothers of Lambda Chapter. When we
returned to campus in the fall we poured our enthusiasm into rush. Our enthusiasm lasted for
weeks ... Unfortunately rush lasted for months. Yet, after four months and buckets of sweat, Rush Czar Tobias
presented us with a quality pledge class. What they lacked in quantity they made up for in their creativity in
making drinks, Stop-In dogs, and new dental hygiene techniques. Thanks for Brother Farrish we will never
be able to look at a colostomy bag in the same way.
We kicked off the social year with our "annual" Mardi Gras and New Year's in September parties. Our
Christmas weekend formal was enlivened by the antics of our "Super Bowl"Santa, Jon Hughes (sound of
breaking glass). Our busy winter social schedule was capped off with FD and the pledge-active football game,
which consisted of Brother Swensen running for his life. Once again in the spring, Shipwreck proved to be the
largest party on campus with Right On and Agents of Good Roots attracting droves of people to 4 Henry Street.
Often imitated, never duplicated.
It was another successful year on the playing fields for Sigma Nu, with varsity athletes on the cross country,
track, and wrestling teams. Chad Casto was W&L's only wrestler to reach the NCAA Regional Wrestling
Tournament, while Darrick Alford, Will Olson, Ben LaBrecque, and Brian Huse led the track and cross country
teams to successful seasons.
We bid a fond farewell to this year's senior class (and one member of the class of '96). If we're lucky, maybe
this class will be successful and give us some money. Good luck as you hop on Traveler and ride off into the

Chi Omega
This year proved to be another successful one for the sisters of the Xi Lambda chapter of Chi Omega. With Callie James and Jenn
Justema as our fearless leaders, we were once again proved outstanding in many aspects of student life while still having our fair share
of fun.
Chi Omega sisters were involved in many organizations on campus: dorm counselors, peer counselors, and LIFE members
endured numerous training sessions so that they could be there when we needed them. Student Recruitment members provided
guided tours for all, while our sisters in Kathekon made sure that alumni were able to comfortable and safely relive their college
experiences. Some of our more intelligent members were inducted into rival Greek organizations such as Phi Beta Kappa and ODK.
Several class officers and members of SJC were also Chi O's, as were participants in FOC, FD, Jubilee, Chamber Singers, Ducks
Unlimited, and the Trident. Had Sasha played lacrosse again, we could have boasted participation in every women's varsity sport;
despite this disappointment, we managed to be among the best represented Greek organizations in University Chorus. Our talents
were also showcased in various theatrical performances, chocolate pudding wrestling, and artistic endeavors such as pumpkin
carving at Halloween and our stellar Homecoming modeling; three Chi O's were featured in the new catalog available at the W&L
bookstore. Always willing to help others, we sponsored the annual Making Strides walk for cancer and constructed houses for
Habitat for Humanity.
Our proudest moment came in October when Natalia Garcia was crowned Homecoming Queen. Amy Jones followed suit in April
when she gained the coveted title of Derby Days Queen.
Despite the many campus activities with which we were involved, we also managed to have a great time. With Kappa, we did
"anything for money", and we showed our trashy side at Headbangers' with Theta. Our annual favorites, Persephone's Gala and
White Carnation allowed us to boogie with our sisters; fraternity mixers, "grab-a-date" parties, and a "screw your sister" were also
interspersed with our academic pursuits.
Although we are sad to say goodbye to our graduating seniors, a highly successful rush gave us 17 great new sis ters whom we
are confident will carry on the traditions and sisterhood of Chi Omega.

__ppaDelta
The greek community at Washington and Lee welcomed its newest sorority-- Zeta Tau chapter of Kappa Delta with open arms! We were overwhelmed by the offers to "mix" with everyone
and were excited to meet y'all a little at a time .... Our first mixer, "Famous Lovers" with Kappa
was a huge success-- due a large part to President and Mrs. Elrod who so graciously allowed us
to use their pictures for our t-shirts. Then, we partied down with the sisters of Pi Beta Phi at
"Beach Blanket Bingo" held at the infamous Zollman's during March. We heard it was a huge
hit with the guys as the Baywatch babes were rumored to have made an unexpected appearance.
We also grooved with the brothers of Kappa Alpha during Buffalo Creek, and barbecued with
the strapping young bucks of Sigma Chi! Finally, our first year was capped off with our first
formal with Theta at the pavilion. We had great times with y'all-- you kept our social chairs on
their toes!
Our sisters were also active on the hill and beyond ... we have sisters on 7 varsity sports, and
Executive Committee representative, sisters in Jubilee, General Admission, University Scholars,
and just about everything else! With all this talked, we were able to finish 3rd in our first ever
Derby Days and hold our first annual Shamrock Project to benefit the Children's Hospital of
Richmond (our National Philanthropy) . The Alpha pledge class, although comprised of almost
60 girls, has become a family. We' ve come a long way in just six short months are looking forward to continuing our hard work and play in the fall.

Kappa Kappa Gan1rna
The Zeta Tau Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma had another exiting school year in 1996-97. The Kappas
continue to shine in athletics, leadership, academics, and having fun under the leadership of President Anna
O'Connor and the next President Carson Flowers.
Kappas can be seen everywhere on the hill and beyond. Kappas participated in lacrosse, tennis, track, crosscountry, and soccer. Kappas also held many leadership positions in student groups such as the Executive
Committee, the Student Judiciary Committee, Class Presidents and Vice-Presidents, SAB, Kathekon, Student
Recruitment, Women in Leadership,FancyDressCommittee, Dorm Counselor Staff, Theater,Jubilee,Freshman
Orientation Committee, big sisters, small group leaders and more. Kappa was also excited to have several
members initiated into ODK, Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Eta Sigma, and Alpha Epsilon Delta.
Kappa had good times this year too. We enjoyed many social events such as Fall Formal, tailgates, Famous
Lovers, Monmouth, Kite and Key, Anything for Money-- Dark Side of the Moon, Supermixers, and the Spring
Formal. Kappas also helped out in the community with pumpkin carving and making Valentines at the
Mayflower, and food drives.
1997 Rush brought 19 super new pledges! These girls are sure to uphold the strength of Kappa Kappa Gamma.
Good luck to the Seniors! You will be missed!

Pi Beta Phi
Things just keep getting better for the Virginia Theta chapter of Pi Beta Phi. No longer the new sorority on
campus, chapter members spent the last half of 1996-97 acclimating to their new senior status.
With the addition of this year's pledges, Pi Phi again ranked first in grades on campus with a 3.319 placing
them above the all student GP A for Winter term. The group also inducted members into ODK.
Senior Brooke Glenn led the lacrosse team as Co-Captain, and Bligh Wollner and Laura Cohen made their way
through yet another year of swimming and tennis respectively. Jana set some records in cross country, while
Nicole Richard oversaw our Adapt-A-School program.
But it is not all work and not play for the sisters of Pi Beta Phi. The chapter started off strong in 1996 with their
annual"Nightcap" screw-your-sister date function at senior Tracy Marshall's house, in addition to their Beaux
& Arrows formal and Homecoming and Parent's Weekend festivities. Winter and Spring terms were non-stop
with a Beach Blanket Bingo party with KD, St. Patrick's Day with Sig Ep, Monmouth Duo with Kappa, Spring
Fling with Theta, and a 70's mixer at Champz with Chi-0.
It was an unbelievable year for the sisters of Pi Phi - one no member will forget. Good luck to all the
seniors ...you'll be missed greatly.
